I just some comments that said some events in Slay The Gods donghua is confusing, so I make an explanation post to explain some plot points and make it more easy to understand.
1. World setting
Slay The Gods took a place in another universe where 100 years ago a strange fog engulfed the earth. All countries fall, no news comes from the place inside the fog. The only place that isn’t engulf by the fog is Daxia. It’s the only livable place now. But why is Daxia the only place that hasn’t swallowed by the fog? The reason will be revealed later in the story.
Spoiler: it’s related to the reason why there’s no gods appear/ observed in Daxia in the last 100 years.
2. Deity & Mythical Creatures
Unknown to the public, people in Daxia actually carried exploration inside the fogs & discover there’s not only people still survive there, but also trace of deities/gods & mythical creatures. The first one they discover is the chaos dragon, Leviathan. Since Leviathan is the first one they observe, Daxia gives it code number 001. Leviathan is Code 001. Michael is deity [Code 003] & Lucifer deity [Code 004]. This deity code number doesn’t have anything to do with how strong a deity is, but rather the sequence of discovery.
3. Power System
There are three ways for a human to obtain extraordinary power in Slay The Gods. The first is innate ability, called Forbidden Ruins. The second is controlling items that possess Forbidden Ruins abilities. The third is a god grants a portion of their power to a human (divine agent).
Forbidden Ruins
The fog contains radiation-like energy that has a catalytic effect on the bodies of some people. Newborns born after the fog descended have a chance to develop a unique power within their bodies. This power is called Forbidden Ruins.
Forbidden Items/ Forbidden Relics
Just like how the fogs release radiation-like that can make some people awakening Forbidden Ruins, some items can also get exposed to this radiation and develop special abilities. These items are called Forbidden Items/ Relics.
By the way, Forbidden Ruins and Forbidden Items was recorded and given number by Daxia official. Those numbers are divided according to the power/abilities of the Forbidden Ruins/Forbidden Items into 4 category: Harmless, Dangerous, High Risk, Ultra High Risk. The smaller the number, the more powerful.
Forbidden Ruins with number 031 – 089 are categorized Ultra High Risk Forbidden Ruins. It doesn’t stated in the donghua, but in the novel it was explained that Lin Qiye’s training camp is very special because they have 3 new recruits who possessed Ultra High Risk/ Ultra Hazardous Forbidden Ruins.
Those 3 are:
- Moli (Forbidden Ruins 076)
- Shen Qingzhu (Forbidden Ruins 068)
- Cao Yuan ( Forbidden Ruins 031)
Not to mention, there’s also the young master of Baili Group (Baili Pangpang) who possess so many forbidden items. More importantly, they also have Lin Qiye, the divine agent.
Forbidden Ruins 031 to Forbidden Ruins with bigger number is still in human realm. Number 000 – 030 are power/abilities in god’s realm. Which is why it is said that Cao Yuan’s Forbidden Ruins is above all human & below the gods
Divine Ruins & King Ruins
Power number 000 – 030 are power/abilities in god’s realm. 23 of those power are directly from god’s power & are also called as Divine Ruins. The person who has Divine Ruins is called as Divine Agent. Lin Qiye is a Michael’s Divine Agent who possesed Divine Ruins number 003 (Mortal Divine Realm).
While the other 7 powers derived from humanity (with power in god’s realm). These 7 power are called King Ruins. Special Squad 001 & 002 has members with King Ruins, while Special Squad 003, 004 and 005 has captain with Divine Ruins.
While Deity Code number is based on the sequence of discovery, the number given to the powers (divine ruins, king ruins, forbidden ruins) are based on how strong the power/impact is. Michael’s deity code is 003. Lin Qiye’s divine ruins (Mortal Divine Realm) is also no 003. His divine ruins is the ability to create miracle. While Michael having code 003 doesn’t means he is the 3rd strongest god, Lin Qiye’s divine ruins 003 is indeed very strong (not necessary about combat). Although you will only realize how strong his divine ruins is after you watch season 2. Just prepare your tear duct for the reveal😭.
Mental Power and Realms
The ability, scope, and particularity of the Divine Ruins/Forbidden Ruins/people who wield Forbidden Items can grow. Increasing with the increase of the owner’s mental power. That mental power is divided into six realms. Those 6 realms are:
- Klein
- Zhan (cup)
- Chi (pool)
- Chuan (river)
- Hai (sea)
- Wuliang (infinite/limitless)
Lin Qiye can open Nyx’s door because he has reach Zhan realm & he can open Merlin’s door when he reach Chi realm. Those 6 realm are for human. After Klein there’s also human ceiling/ top human combatant. Daxia has 5 such beings. They’re capable of fighting gods but not to defeat them. They are One Sword, One Rider, One Sovereign, One Void and One Master.
After them there’s gods (minor gods, main gods, supreme gods), and even higher than those, there’s Ascenders.
4. Night Watchman
In this universe, the power of the gods are directly related to the number of people worship/conquered by them. Daxia has hundred of millions people, so outer gods are eyeing them & want to conquer Daxia. Meanwhile it doesn’t appear to have gods to protect them.
This is the reason Daxia create Night Watchman. Mythical creatures are appearing at higher rate & there’s outer gods want to conquer Daxia, so they recruit the strongest people as Night Watchman to protect the mass. The Commander in Chief of Night Watchman is one of human ceiling (One Sovereign).
3 of human ceiling already appear in season 1, One Sword (Zhou Ping) & One Rider (Lu Wuwei) & One Master (Master Chen). Zhou Ping & Lu Wuwei appear in the post credit scene of episode 15. Master Chen already appear in episode 11 (the one who is inside the horse carriage). While One Void is already mentioned. He’s the one who create this game.
Night Watchman has 5 special teams & 322 local teams. Those local teams are located in regions covering all of Daxia. Team with smaller team number are in region where mythical creatures more abundant. Therefore people tend to think that team with smaller number is stronger.
The team which is considered the strongest, outside of the 5 special team, is Team 006 in Shanjing city. The one who frequently getting calls from Chen Muye is the captain of 006 team, Shao Pingge. While Yuan Gang, the chief instructor of training camp, is the deputy captain.
Team 136 is the Night Watchman team that is stationed in Cangnan city. Each city has their own Night Watchman team. While Special Squads are mobile. They have special purpose & usually called when there’s special case that can’t be handled by local Night Watchman team.
The only Special Squad that appears in the donghua for now is Special Squad 004, Masked Team. Their tasks is to defeat special mythical creatures that can’t be handled by local Night Watchman team. They actually consist of 7 members, but only 5 that come to the training camp.
5. The Future 005 Special Squad, Nightfall
Actually I saw a comment that Slay The Gods have many prominent side characters & the commenter wonder why they even in the story & I was like, “huh?? They’re going to be the protagonist’s future squad! Aren’t you see the foreshadowing?”
These people aren’t randomly in the donghua. They are the heart and soul of the story (along with the other 2 team members: Jia Lan and Jiang Er). In the first season, you already introduced to An Qingyu, Shen Qingzhu, Baili Pangpang & Cao Yuan
An Qingyu is the future deputy captain of Nightfall. This smart & handsome man who is also eccentric, is the brain of the team alongside Lin Qiye. He will be someone who will help Lin Qiye to defeat all of their enemies, no matter what.
Shen Qingzhu is a special existence in the team. He looks arrogant but he actually the softest. Lin Qiye himself said if there is no Shen Qingzhu he might not be able to come out alive from numerous predicament. You will see this more in season 2 (please prepare your tear duct).
Baili Pangpang is the mood maker & money of the team. Everything that needs money goes smoothly with him around. Anyway, Pangpang in Chinese means Chubby but Baili Pangpang use it as his nickname.
Cao Yuan is a reliable teammate whose power has save Nightfall Squad numerous time. He’s also very loyal to Lin Qiye & love his teammates.
6. Explanation for some scenes
The donghua cut many things in the novel so I’ll try to give context to some of them:
- Aside from erasing memory, Night Watchman actually also has a special clean up department who will handle the aftermath of Night Watchman battle. Otherwise, why do you think information about them & mythical creatures hasn’t emerge for years? They have specialized department for that. Spoiler: in Lin Qiye era, this information is not covered anymore. Which is why in the future, Lin Qiye’s 6 wings angel become meme.
- I also saw a comment that confuse about power scaling here, because how could new recruits fight against special team? They might missed the part where it was explained Masked Team already suppress their realm to Zhan realm (they have forbidden item that can do that).
Other than suppressing his realm to Zhan realm, Wang Mian also use only 30% of his power. Otherwise the training camp will be destroyed (still destroyed in episode 8 tho). Special team in their peak power is very very strong. Those new recruits wouldn’t have chance to defeat them if they don’t suppress their power.
- I also saw people confuse at this scene and wonder why Lin Qiye doesn’t have this power when fighting Snake Woman. Well, this one isn’t canon in the novel. Actually, Lin Qiye as Nyx soul bearer can also summon starlight power from the sky like this. So I would like to think that this is Nyx granted her power temporary to Lin Qiye through Ursa Major (the great bear). Anyway, this isn’t Lin Qiye’s canon power at this stage
- Come to think of it, the donghua doesn’t even explain his name. This is Instructor Hong. He will be very important in season 2.
- Actually, from this conversation you know that Shen Qingzhu’s life is kind of rough & he doesn’t have much money. Shen Qingzhu used to live in an orphanage. All 3 of them respect Shen Qingzhu. This is also a foreshadowing that the 4 of them will be in Nightfall Squad.
- I saw some comment of people who confuse with Lin Qiye’s power. Basically when he radiate yellow glow, it means he use his divine ruins from Michael. If he radiate dark purple, he use his divine ruins from Nyx, & when he use both, one of his eyes is yellow, the other is purple
There’s also people who comment that his power is inconsistent. Sometimes he is strong & sometimes he’s very strong. Actually, his power from Nyx (Starry Night Dancer) makes him 5x more strong than usual. So when he fights at night (Nyx is goddess of the night), he will be 5 x stronger than if he fights at other time.
And this one is a fight when he lost his divine ruins temporary. So it is his human strength, pure martial arts with no enhancement. Can not be compared with his fights using divine ruins.
- There’s a question about Ancient God’s Church motive in recruiting Lin Qiye. Basically, Ancient God’s Church is a sect that worship 3 outer gods. Just like I mention earlier, outer gods actually want to invade Daxia. But the outer gods are hesitant to attack for now because they thought there are still gods in Daxia. One of things they prepare for future war is Ancient God’s Church that will do their bidding. Lin Qiye is a divine agent, in Daxia, divine agent is as rare as phoenix feathers.
- When he first appeared, Lin Qiye is only in Zhan realm. But once he grow, his power will be really immense (because he’s a divine agent). If this immense power becomes their member, it will be beneficial for their cause. This is why they send people in episode 10 to recruit Lin Qiye. But Lin Qiye chose to reject them & join Night Watchman, he will be a threat in the future. So it’s better for them to kill Lin Qiye when he isn’t that powerful yet.
- There’s people who confuse with the sequence of events in episode 11 – 15. As I said, in episode 10 Ancient God’s Church tried to recruit Lin Qiye but fail. Then in episode 11, Lin Qiye obtained Nyx’s power “Dark Corrosion” & Nyx come out from the gods’ psychiatric hospital. Lin Qiye saw that Nyx was getting mental ilness because her children are massacred. Who killed her children & why? This is a spoiler that will be explain much later in the story. These are also kind of spoiler. Anyway, there’s many foreshadowing in season 1.
Because Nyx come out, Night Watchmen know that Lin Qiye has become a divine agent of Nyx too. So Night Watchman determine to keep him safe & stay with them. Unfortunately, there’s spy among the higher ranking (it will exposed later in next seasons).
As I said, even as ordinary divine agent, once Lin Qiye grow in power he will become a threat to Ancient God’s Church goal. And now suddenly they know that Lin Qiye will be a greater threat because he has power from 2 gods.
So they determine to kill Lin Qiye while he’s still a weak newbie. At the same time, the bounty for Baili Pangpang also appear in black market. The reason why there’s someone who put bounty on Pangpang’s head will be revealed in the future. Please prepare ur tear duct
Anyway, Ancient God’s Church want to:
- kill Lin Qiye
- kill Baili Pangpang to get the bounty money
So they will attack the training camp. Team 136 has tracked suspicious personel that they thought are Ancient God’s Church members, then those people start moving. That’s why Captain Chen Muye request the training camp to be suspended temporary. They want to put Lin Qiye in a safe place. Then they will track those Ancient God’s Church members to eliminate them one by one.
The snake woman is faster tho, she immediately sabotage a missile station, then fired missiles to the recruit’s bus. Fortunately Lin Qiye use his “Dark Corrosion” to save them. After he was unconcious, Team 136 put him in a safe place (actually in the novel, Team 136 doesn’t hide Lin Qiye).
There’s several differences between the novel and donghua, but I will explain the donghua version. In episode 12, each member of Team 136 fight against Ancient God’s Church member, with captain Chen Muye personally intercept Han Shaoyun. Han Shaoyun is an ex Night Watchman.
So in Ancient God’s Church, there’s several high ranking members called Believer. Han Shaoyu is one of the Believer. The one who attack Lin Qiye in episode 10 also a Believer (no 16). Their power are greater the smaller their code number are. Han Shaoyun is Believer no. 13.
Aside from Believer, Ancient God’s Church has 3 chief “gods”. One of them is Yiyu (murmur). He is very dangerous because he can make a soul contract where the people will be completely under his command. Han Shaoyun’s Night Watchman team was destroyed by Yiyu.
Yiyu then held Han Shaoyun’s girlfriend (Qingqing) hostage and force Han Shaoyun to make a contract with him, thus turning into Believer no. 13. Anyway, while Chen Muye confront Han Shaoyun, Yuan Gang confront the spies from Ancient God’s Church inside Night Watchman.
While Lin Qiye break free from the place he was keep, he saw the attack on Baili Pangpang. So some of the Ancient God’s Church members are tasked to kill Lin Qiye, and some tasked to kill Baili Pangpang. The one that tasked to kill Lin Qiye has been intercepted by Team 136.
No one has deal with the members that tasked to kill Baili Pangpang because Baili Pangpang himself has 4 guardians/bodyguards. While waiting his guardians, he hide in a hotel. Unfortunately, before his guardians come, he was attacked first. Fortunately Lin Qiye come and save him.
Anyway, after the attack they feel hungry so come to a noodle shop to eat. At that place they meet Shen Qingzhu. Lin Qiye asked Shen Qingzhu to protect Baili Pangpang (& Cao Yuan) since he want to check on his aunt & cousin.
In the middle of his trip to his aunt’s house, Lin Qiye was intercepted by a member of Ancient God’s Church in episode 13. Now episode 13 is a completely new story, an original episode that isn’t in the novel, so I won’t talk much about it. The original author of Slay The Gods think that the donghua scriptwriter probably want to depict the transition of Lin Qiye from an innocent teenager to a fighter that will kill people if necessary to protect the greater good in the episode 13. But who knows.
Anyway, after episode 13, Snake Woman come to kill Lin Qiye. In the novel, Lin Qiye actually fight her himself & he end up doesn’t kill her (she was saved by Han Shaoyun). In the donghua, they make the fights between Lin Qiye and Snake Woman happen at the same time Chen Muye fight Han Shaoyun. In the novel, Lin Qiye actually witness the battle between Team 136 and Han Shaoyun.
In the donghua, Lin Qiye went to his aunt’s house –> meet a member of Ancient God’s Church (episode 13) –> Meet Snake Woman (episode 14) –> fight Snake Woman with An Qingyu –> losing his divine power temporary –> go to save his aunt & cousin –> Happy new year.
If you wonder why An Qingyu can know that Lin Qiye’s family is in danger, it’s because he extract the ability of Nanda Snake demon to share vision and put this ability within him and his rats. He spread his rats in town & everything his rats see, he can see too if he want.
At the same time, Team 136 fight with Han Shaoyun and win with the help of Shen Qingzhu. The donghua end with Lin Qiye texting Chen Muye that he’s hungry. In the novel, when Lin Qiye fight Snake Woman, Han Shaoyun come. Then Chen Muye & Team 136 come and fight Han Shaoyun.
- I saw a comment that said they don’t understand how Shen Qingzhu can prevent the storm with one snap of his fingers. It’s all because of his forbidden ruins 068 (Qi Min). Shen Qingzhu power is controlling air. He can freely control air composition, create vacuum, etc
I think it might be because people mostly only remember that he fights with explosion but his power actually not that. His power is controlling air (in which he can easily create fire & explosion). While Han Shaoyun Forbidden Ruin is 079 (Great Storm). As I mention earlier, Forbidden Ruins is stronger when the number is smaller, particularly for similar style. Shen Qingzhu’s 068 is stronger in air control than Han Shaoyun’s 079. That’s why although Han Shaoyun is in Sea realm, 2 level more than Shen Qingzhu in Pool realm, it is still possible for Shen Qingzhu to dispersed Han Shaoyun’s storm.
In season 1, people might feel the climax is not enough. That’s because season 1 end in the middle of the Volume 1 of the book. The real highlight is battle with the gods that will happen in season 2. I’d like to give people warning tho. Don’t watch this donghua if you’re too religious. The title of the donghua is Slay The Gods so obviously there will be gods that get slayed in this donghua so it might offend some people.
